"South Africa Lockdown Remembered"

United Apart examines South Africa’s decision to impose one of the world’s strictest COVID-19 lockdowns in March 2020, at a time when infections were still low. Through firsthand accounts, expert analysis, and powerful citizen-generated stories, the documentary explores how sweeping restrictions reshaped daily life, devastated the informal economy, and exposed deep social and economic fault lines. As vulnerable communities faced hunger, policing intensified, and hard-won freedoms felt suddenly fragile, United Apart asks whether a developing nation can afford to mirror lockdown models of wealthier countries — and at what cost. Giving voice to ordinary citizens, frontline workers, and leading thinkers, the film captures a nation forced to confront the uneasy balance between saving lives and protecting livelihoods.
